Connecting with Others

Participating in a study abroad does not automatically guarantee that you’ll start speaking perfectly, nor is it the only kind of experience that makes learning a language worth it. However, for many students, spending time in-country with native speakers can help them see the beginnings of where their language can take them.

Listen as these students, who participated in a year-long Arabic study abroad in Morocco, describe how their experiences enriched their study of Arabic and their lives.

Time Required: 10 minutes

  1. Ponder how you can make your target language feel more “real” now, no matter where you are.
  2. Find a relevant cultural activity in your area that might connect you to native speakers and make plans to attend or use social media to set up a conversation exchange arrangement (e.g., half the time in English and half the time in the target language).
